Ferril Nawir was born in Jakarta, Indonesia.
His life experience and cultural exposure is as diverse as to the places he has lived in for the past 25 years – Los Angeles, Colorado, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Hawaii, New York, Java and Bali Indonesia. Presently he lives in Los Angeles, California. He operates 2 studio workshops simultaneously in both Los Angeles and Surabaya, Indonesia.
He went to Los Angeles Valley College in the early 70’s majoring in commercial art. In 1975 he attended the Arts Student League of New York. He studied the art of Batik and textile silk screening  and the “ikat” weaving processes extensively in 1976 – 77 at Solo (Java) and Gianyar (Bali), Indonesia. His Batik fabrics and tapestries has been exhibited in California, Colorado, New York, Utah, Massachusetts, Hawaii and at the Smithsonian Institute (Renwick Gallery). He was featured in Women’s Wear Daily (’85- under Better fabrics section), Seventeen Magazine and at AN teve channel of Indonesia (1996).
He is a master of the Batik Art and his latest achievements in furthering the exploration of the Batik process possibilities is that he is able to perform this art on wood (solid wood & panels) as well.
Resulting in painted images and designs that are “imbedded into” the grains of the wood NOT on the surface (such as paints and wood stains etc). This new found art process on wood visually gives the viewer a fresh new way of looking at images that are painted “in” a canvas of wood panels. The new possibilities seems to be endless. He now predominantly Batik paints on wood resulting in a vast collection of Batik wood paintings that varies in subject matter and styles. He also produces (commissioned work) one of a kind and original limited edition wood panels for the Interior Décor and Architectural trade (door panels, friezes, wall panels, table tops, room screens etc).
His wood Batik paintings has been exhibited in Nebraska, California, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Colorado, Texas, Jakarta and Bali Indonesia.

From 1994 to 1997 he produced stamped and hand batiked wood panels for overseas Hotels, Country Clubs, Condominium commissioned projects. Such as Bali Nirvana Resort, Sheraton Laguna Hotel, Bali Padma Hotel, Melia Benoa Bali Hotel, Nusa Dua Gallery Condominium project, Menteng Jakarta Hotel, Matoa Golf and Country Club project (Jakarta) and much more. For these projects Ferril Nawir was exclusively represented by PT. Intra Adhistana one of the top & well known Interior & Furniture contractors of Indonesia.

Past clientele for his exclusive silk fabrics includes Perry Ellis (NY), Calvin Klein (NY), Henri Bendel (NY), Cottler (NY), Laize Adzere (L.A), Fred Segal (L.A) and much more.

Ferril Nawir paints in oils, acrylics, watercolors and mixed media as well and had done numerous commissioned mural projects and portraitures.
